Risk of Harm Self-Assessment and Workshops

Sussex Probation Area (SPA) use the Risk of Harm materials developed by de Montfort University as their key tool in raising the skill levels of all Offender Management staff.

Skills & Projects have implemented a self-assessment process, based on our ELAN Learning Needs Analysis tool. Self assessment is undertaken by the member of staff concerned and validated by their line manager, as a basis for recognising existing competence and planning future development.

The roll out of the self-assment process has been supported by a series of workshops, designed and facilitated by Skills & Projects. The workshops provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on their use of the Risk of Harm materials and the self-assessment tool, will help with any technical issues, and will discuss how reports from the self assessment system might be used in respect of individual and team development.

What the system does:

  • Provide a view of how the materials are being used and focus training and development accordingly
  • Identify best practice
  • Encourage staff to complete self assessments in line with appraisal timescales
  • Minimise paperwork in a cost effective manner
  • Collect review and evaluation feedback required by NOMS
  • Provide reports at an individual, team, and organisational level
  • Encourage managers to use the on-line system as a development resource
  • Integrates with SPA’s intranet and is used alongside the materials themselves
